Life's going swimmingly: But a healthy-looking Amy Winehouse doesn't get her beehive wet round the pool

For a North London girl, she's always seemed more at home in sunnier climes - but Amy Winehouse couldn't quite let her hair down as she relaxed in Brazil this week.

The grinning 27-year-old singer was lazing round the pool at her hotel for the afternoon with one of the musicians from her band - but resisted the temptation to have a dip in case it got her hair wet.

Instead, she laughed and joked with him as she recharged her batteries on a sunlounger while he cooled off in the hotel pool.

The star is staying at the Santa Teresa hotel in Rio de Janeiro as she undertakes a mini tour of the South American country and looks in better health than she has done in years.

She jetted out to the tropics after seeing in the New Year in London, and checked into the £700-per-night hotel in the hills overlooking Rio's Guanabara Bay as her base while she plays five nights in the country.

Wearing a khaki bandeau bikini top and her ubiquitous cut-off denim shorts, the singer was a world away from the emaciated, grey-skinned girl that stalked the streets of Camden more than a year ago.

It's rumoured that as well as being happy that she's finally back playing live - and apparently pocketing a £5million cheque for just five shows - the star is looking happy because she has a new man.

While some papers are reporting that the Back To Black soulstress is back with ex Reg Traviss, The Sun reported yesterday that an expat barman in Brazil has caught her eye.

The paper said that the man, known only as Paul, hails from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, and is currently working at the bar of her Rio hotel.

The singer has previously told friends she was looking for a new boyfriend and would be happier to meet someone 'normal'.

A friend said: 'She never thought that she'd be single at 27, and now she just really wants to find a normal guy to settle down with and have a baby.'

Her fans however will be hoping she gives birth to a new album first now that she's finally kicked drugs.

Amy is insisting that she has been clean and drug free for a year, after seeing a photo of herself last January looking wild and messed up.

She previously said of the picture, which showed her pale, gaunt and covered in cuts: 'I thought: "Girl, you've got sort yourself out or you'll be dead soon".'

However, being clean hasn't yet resulted in the hoped-for burst of creativity, with the only new material announced so far a song which will feature on Quincy Jones's new tribute album Q: Soul Bossa Nostra.

A follow-up to her smash-hit 2006 second album Back To Black has been in the pipeline for the past four years, but the singer's personal battles have hitherto got in the way of her progressing with her recording career.

However, now that she seems physically back to her best and having turned in some good comeback performances so far in Brazil, there are high hopes that her new album will see the light of day as planned in 2011 - giving Amy even more to grin about.

The star received some rave reviews for her Summer Soul Festival appearance in Florianópolis on Saturday night.

She belted out a number of tunes from her back catalogue as well as a number of covers dressed in in a pink and white gingham dress which boosted her surgery-enhanced assets.
