Make-up malfunction! Lady Gaga overdoes the fake tan and face powder for surprise show in New York bar

She's known for her outrageous style and oddball fashions - but Lady Gaga possibly didn't intend the white face/orange body look she sported at an impromptu gig in New York City last night.

The 24-year-old Bad Romance star had most definitely slathered on too much fake tan, judging by the orange palms of her hands, but had over compensated by slapping on too much foundation and powder onto her face.

The bizarre look was completed with a barely-there bondage dress, that just about kept the singer decent.

Scroll down to watch video of her performance...

Mind you, none of the lucky punters at the plush Plaza Hotel's legendary Oak Room And Bar were concentrating of her looks once she started singing - and unleashed her incredible voice.

While the glitzy big-bucks People's Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles - where the singer was nominated Favourite Female Artist but was pipped by Katy Perry - Gaga joined her jazz musician friend Brian Newman on stage to show off her fine voice at a truly intimate gig.

She covered Nat King Cole's Orange Coloured Sky and George Gershwin's jazz standard Someone To Watch Over Me, which has been sung by the likes of Chet Baker, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra.

She later posed for pictures with fans and one who was there managed to film one of her songs and posted it up on YouTube.

Posting as Kahvm17, they said: 'Speechless! We were so caught off guard because we had no idea she was going to be there. We went to see Brian Newman perform, not expecting a performance from the lady!

'I love Gaga SO much. I am so happy to have been there. So fortunate to hear her sing.'

Meanwhile, workaholic Gaga last week announced that her new album, Born This Way, will be released on May 23, with the album’s title track coming on Feb 13.

Feb 13 is also the date for the 2011 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where the singer is nominated for six awards.

Lady Gaga is currently having a month off from her massive Monster Ball tour, which started in November 2009, but started just months after her debut Fame Ball world tour.
